From icons and emotes to gliders and back bling, Fortnite offers a huge variety of ways to customize your character so that they better represent you as a player and one of the most important and most interesting ways to do that is through character outfits aka skins.
There are over a thousand different skins in Fortnite, some of which were available only for a brief time, and some you can still purchase or obtain today. Often a player will jump into a game and come across a skin they didn’t even know existed. This article will answer your question: “What is the rarest Fortnite skin?”.
What Makes a Fornite Skin Rare?
There are different factors that come into play when talking about skin rarity. In most games, Fortnite included, different skins are already classified as uncommon, common, rare, etc. This classification serves as a way to distinguish between the quality of the skin (how good it looks or if it has some special effects or animations) and their shop prices.
However, that’s not the topic of this article. When people talk about rare skins they mean skins that not a lot of people have. So, which skins are players less likely to have?
Also, you may check out our previous post on how to get free Fortnite skins as we have shared free redeem codes in their.
We can split rare skins into multiple categories based on the reason why not a lot of players have them. Skins have been a big part of the game ever since the game’s release in July 2017.
Whether it’s because of a new patch, event, battle pass, ranked season, sponsored promotion, or some other reason, new skins have consistently been coming out for five years now.
One way to obtain these skins is to purchase them from the item shop with V- bucks, Fortnite’s in-game currency. After a while, skins will disappear from the shop and you can never be certain whether they’ll be brought back in the future.
What Are The Rarest Skins in Fortnite?
Instead of just listing off a dozen rarest skins, we’ll split them up into categories based on how the skin came to be considered rare. Here’s are some of the rarest Skins in Fortnite based on categories.
Rarest Skins in Skin Shop
Apart from certain heavily demanded and holiday exclusive skins, when a skin gets released, sooner or later it’ll stop appearing in the shop. Sometimes, the developers will surprise the playerbase by re-releasing a skin after a couple of years, but for those that haven’t appeared since the game’s first couple of seasons, players shouldn’t get their hopes up.
Renegade Raider

Renegade Raider might just be the rarest skin obtainable from the Item Shop. It was first released on October 26th 2017 in the very first Season and she was last seen on December 13th 2017.
That means that she was last available for purchase over 1800 days ago. There were similar skins released over the years but only the OG players can show off the original Renegade Raider.
How rare is Renegade Raider?
- Extremely rare – hasn’t been available since December 13, 2017.
Aerial Assault Trooper

Another OG skin you are likely never to witness in a game today is the Aerial Assault Trooper skin. His release date and final shop appearance coincide with Renegade Raider.
To be able to purchase the skin for 1,200 V-Bucks you had to reach Level 15 in the Season Shop. Although the skin is far from spectacular, it remains a symbol of pride for long-standing fans of the game.
How Rare is the Aerial Assault Trooper Skin?
- Extremely rare – most players choose the Renegade Raider, resulting to this skin to be a rare one.
Special Forces

Although there are multiple skins that haven’t appeared since the first Seasons of Fortnite, Special Forces is often referenced when talking about rare skins. Part of the reason might be that even though Special Forces made a re-appearance in the Item Shop in early 2019, because of its simplistic design not a lot of players felt the need to buy the skin.
So although it’s very unlikely that we will see this skin featured in the Shop later in the future, I doubt players are exactly heartbroken about it. It does earn you some OG brownie points though.
How Rare is the Special Forces Skin?
- Very rare – Hasn’t appeared in the item shop since 2019. Only few has it.
Shaman

Definitely one of the coolest and more unique skins that came out in the first couple of years since the game’s release is Shaman. This skin takes its inspiration from the combination of real-life shamans in North Asian as well as North American culture.
It was first released on March 31st 2019 and was last seen on December 2nd 2019, over 1100 days ago. The price of the skin was 1,500 V-Bucks.
Rarest TV Show Skins
Inserting pop culture references in video games is not a new concept and it is quite interesting to see characters from a franchise you love make an appearance in a game you love.
These skins come out as an advertisement for the shows they represent and are usually only available for a limited time only.
Black Widow

One of the most well-received collaborations that Fortnite has done in the past is with Marvel characters. A lot of people were very excited when the Black Widow skin first released and in turn, a lot of them were happy to spend 1,500 V-Bucks to display this badass female superhero in their games.
However, since the skin made its debut on April 25th 2019, it only appeared a handful of times until its final appearance on May 6th the same year, which makes it pretty rare compared to for example the Captain America outfit which was available for purchase earlier this year.
Considering the fact that they didn’t bring it back after the Black Widow movie hit theaters in 2021, it is safe to assume that it’ll never be brought back to the Item Shop.
How Rare is the Black Widow Skin?
- Very rare – Hasn’t returned to the item shop since the event.
Demogorgon and Chief Hopper

Demogorgon is monster from Stranger Things – this skin is a product of Collabrations between Epic Games and Stranger Things. Demogorgon can be purchased for 1200 Vbucks and no, you can’t get this item for FREE. If you see websites offering how to get free Demogorgon skin believe me those are 100% fake.

Similarly to Black Widow, the Demogorgon and Chief Hopper skins were really popular when they first appeared in the shop on July 5th 2019, following the release of Stranger Things Season 3.
The Demogorgon was priced at 1,200 V-Bucks and Chief Hopper at 1,500 V-Bucks. Not unlike Black Widow, there’s a big chance that we’ll never get the chance to obtain these skins again since they haven’t been seen in the Item Shop after November 6th 2019, not even when the show’s fourth season aired.
There might still be hope for when the fifth and final season premiers but you shouldn’t get your hopes up.
Rarest Product Promotion skins
Fortnite isn’t the first game to feature special bundles in collaboration with tech companies. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo often sold their consoles alongside popular games as a special promotion. In Fortnite specifically, some of these bundles came with skins you couldn’t obtain by any other means.
Double Helix

Double Helix is a skin you could only obtain by buying the Nintendo Switch Double Helix bundle. The bundle came out on October 5th 2018 and with a retail price of $299.99 stood as one of the most expensive skins in Fortnite.
Galaxy Outfit

As we’ve mentioned earlier in this article, Fortnite did a special promotion with Samsung where by buying the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or Galaxy Tab S4, you could obtain the Galaxy skin.
This is one of the rarest skins in Fortnite by far and I think no one is surprised by that fact. Not a lot of people just had $1,000 lying around to buy a Galaxy Note 9, or even $650 for the Galaxy Tab S4.
Of course, even the ones that had the opportunity to spend so much on a phone most likely didn’t do so for the sole reason of obtaining this skin. Nevertheless, it does earn the players bragging rights for owning it.
How Rare is the Galaxy Skin?
- Very rare – Limited by the high price of the devices and the limited time of the promotion. The Galaxy skin is one of the most expensive Skins in the Fortnite too! Making it the most expensive and one of the rarest skins in the game.
Rarest Battle Pass Skins
Obtaining skins from the Battle Pass is not as simple as just buying the skins in the Item Shop. Some of the skins require you to play for hours on end to reach higher tiers. Once a skin is featured in a Battle Pass, they’re never featured again which is why these skins are so rare.
Black Knight

Apart from being one of the rarest skins in Fortnite, Black Knight also showcases one of the best skin designs in the game. Unlike many rare skins that people don’t particularly care about due to their lackluster design, many players are envious of the fact that they’ll never be able to obtain this legendary outfit.
It was awarded to players who managed to reach Tier 70 of the Season 2 Battle Pass.
How Rare is the Black Knight Skin?
- Very rare – Only available to those who completed the entire Battle Pass at the time.
The Reaper

Since its release in Season 3 as the reward for reaching Tier 100 of the Battle Pass, The Reaper has become a running gag in the Fortnite community for its close resemblance to famous actor Keanu Reeves.
This was made even more entertaining when an actual Keanu Reeves skin appeared in the Item Shop, the John Wick outfit. All jokes aside, it was rather difficult for casual players to reach Tier 100 and since that was the last we’ll ever see of the “original” Keanu Reeves outfit, The Reaper will always remain one of the rarest Fortnite skins.
How Rare is the The Reaper Skin?
- Very rare – Hasn’t been available since the end of Season 3.
Skins from Brand Collaboration
From time to time, Fortnite will announce its collaboration with various brands like Nintendo and Samsung, or even certain TV shows, like Stranger Things. For some collaborations, they will release skins only available if you buy a specific product (in real life).
One example is the Galaxy skin which you could have obtained by purchasing the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or Galaxy Tab S4. These skins are only available for a short while after which you can never obtain the skin again.
You can also obtain skins through the battle pass by reaching certain Tiers. To reach these tiers you need to gather XP by playing matches and completing Challenges/Quests. Battle pass skins are exclusive to that specific battle pass and they don’t return later on.
