Chained Echoes is yet another unique 16-bit visual kind of game that introduces an innovative “overdrive” mechanic that adds a layer of strategy to battles. The game is set on the continent of Valandis amidst a multi-generational war between three kingdoms, Chained Echoes offers a compelling narrative that immerses players in a complex world. With a party of up to 8 characters, players can expect an engaging story that unfolds over 30 to 40 hours of gameplay.
Unique to Chained Echoes, characters do not level up in the traditional sense. Instead, their skills automatically level up through battles, with additional skill points awarded as rewards. As party members use attacks and abilities, the overdrive meter fills up, eventually reaching an optimal green zone where abilities are more potent. However, if the meter overheats, players must discharge excess energy by using specific abilities such as defenses and powerful “Ultra Moves.”
One of the game’s standout features is its turn-based combat system. Unlike most older JRPGs that rely on random encounters, Chained Echoes employs a Chrono Trigger-style approach where enemies are visible on the map and trigger encounters on the same screen. The combat is turn-based, with each party member having access to standard attacks, special abilities, items, and a defensive stance.
